AIG vs Anytime Cyprus car insurance comparison: scenic Cyprus road with two policy documents
TL;DR
Quick Summary
AIG and Anytime are both trusted Cyprus car insurers, and either policy can be bought online. They differ in coverage and tier structure, so the right pick depends on your driver profile. AIG is the only one that extends own-damage cover into the occupied territories of Cyprus. Anytime offers Smart Drive, a telematics-based renewal discount for younger drivers. I've placed dozens of policies with both insurers, so this is a comparison written from inside the broker chair, not from the marketing decks. Anytime serves tens of thousands of Cyprus drivers. AIG Cyprus grew its general insurance book 13% year-on-year to €20.8M in gross written premium during the first half of 2025. Both brands are real, regulated choices, and DigiCare writes business with each one. This guide compares them tier by tier, then gives a clear verdict for each buyer profile.

You can get a car insurance quote in 2 minutes through DigiCare. For broader market context, see the full ranking of the 10 best car insurance companies in Cyprus. The Cyprus motor insurance market produced €132.18M in gross written premium in the first half of 2025, with more than 30 licensed insurers under Cyprus Insurance Companies Control Service oversight.

AIG vs Anytime Cyprus: which is better?

For most Cyprus drivers, AIG Road Star is the broader recommendation. That holds especially true for expats, owners of higher-value vehicles, and Nicosia residents who cross to the occupied areas. Anytime is the better fit for digital-first drivers aged 18 to 30 who can use Smart Drive's telematics discount and don't mind a Greek-first app.

Who is AIG Cyprus, and how strong is the company?

AIG Cyprus is the local branch of AIG Europe S.A., a Luxembourg-incorporated subsidiary of American International Group, Inc. AIG Europe S.A. holds an S&P financial-strength rating of AA- (stable, upgraded in May 2025) and a Moody's A1 rating (stable, upgraded in November 2025).

The corporate chain runs from the New York-listed parent down to AIG Europe S.A., with the Cyprus branch reporting into the Luxembourg entity. Prudential supervision sits with the Commissariat aux Assurances in Luxembourg, while conduct of business in Cyprus falls under the Cyprus Insurance Companies Control Service. The Cyprus office at 26 Esperidon Street, 2001 Strovolos, Nicosia is reachable on +357 22 699999, and the General Manager is George Kitromilides.

AIG Cyprus is a full member of the Insurance Association of Cyprus. On market share, AIG Cyprus held 7.6% of the Cyprus general insurance market in the first half of 2025 with €20.8M in gross written premium, growing 13% year-on-year. The retail product brand is Road Star.

Beyond private motor, AIG Cyprus also writes Motor Fleet Insurance for businesses with 10+ vehicles, Insurance Abroad for Cyprus businesses expanding overseas, and a full commercial portfolio (property, liability, D&O, cyber, marine, professional liability). Anytime in Cyprus operates only in motor lines (auto, smart drive, truck). AIG is the broader insurer if you need a single carrier across personal, fleet, and commercial cover.

What this means for buyers:
AIG sits in the highest financial-strength tier of any Cyprus motor insurer. That matters for high-severity claims and for anyone with a vehicle worth €20,000 or more, where a future bodily-injury or total-loss settlement leans heavily on the insurer's balance sheet.

Who is Anytime Cyprus, and what is the Interamerican / Achmea connection?

Anytime Online by INTERAMERICAN is the direct-sales brand of INTERAMERICAN Hellenic Insurance Company S.A., a Greek joint-stock company that has been part of the Dutch Achmea group since 2001. The Cyprus branch (overseas company AE 3036) entered the Cyprus market in 2017 and operates from 42-44 Griva Digeni Avenue in Nicosia.

The corporate chain runs Achmea (Netherlands) to Interamerican Hellenic (Greece) to the Anytime Cyprus branch. Prudential supervision sits with the Bank of Greece Private Insurance Supervision Division as home-state regulator, with the Cyprus Insurance Companies Control Service handling specific matters in Cyprus. Anytime's Cyprus product matrix consists of nine options: three programs (anytime: auto, anytime: smart drive, anytime: truck) by three tiers each (Economic, Value, Premium).

What this means for buyers:
Anytime is a regulated, Greek-domiciled insurer with Dutch-group corporate backing. Its Cyprus customer base runs into tens of thousands. Unlike AIG Europe S.A., Interamerican Hellenic does not publish a separately maintained S&P or Moody's consumer-facing financial-strength rating equivalent to AIG's AA-/A1.

How do AIG Road Star and Anytime compare on coverage?

AIG Road Star vs Anytime Cyprus car insurance coverage comparison infographic

The two products are built differently. AIG offers three flat tiers. Anytime offers a three-by-three grid. Here's what each side actually covers.

AIG Road Star, three tiers

AIG's Road Star product runs in three layers:

  • Comprehensive (own damage plus the two layers below): €25/day loss of use up to 10 days; new vehicle replacement for vehicles less than 1 year old; €250 key replacement; €170 personal belongings; €800 windscreen with no excess; natural and social perils; overall limit equal to the lesser of market value or declared value.
  • Third-Party Liability, Fire & Theft: fire and theft cover plus TPL.
  • Third-Party Liability: meets the Cap. 333 statutory floor; €8,500 personal accident; €850 medical expenses; 24-hour road and accident assistance in government-controlled Cyprus and the Sovereign Base Areas; driving-another-car extension (Cyprus only, individuals only).

Optional add-ons include no-claim discount protection (covering up to 2 claims in 3 years) and €250 misfueling cover that includes towing, taxi, and replacement vehicle. For a deeper look at the glass cover specifically, see our guide to windscreen cover in Cyprus.

Anytime, three programs by three tiers (9 options)

The three programs are anytime: auto, anytime: smart drive, and anytime: truck. Each one runs in Economic, Value, and Premium tiers. All nine options include third-party liability, passengers liability, cover for authorised drivers, 24-hour Accident Care in Cyprus, and 24-hour Road Assistant in Cyprus and Greece.

The Auto Value tier adds Total Destruction cover, but only for insured values above €30,000, plus airbag cover. Premium-tier policies (across all three programs) add natural perils, strikes and riots, own damage, malicious damage, and separate fire, partial-theft, and complete-theft items. Auto Premium adds replacement with a new vehicle if the insured car is less than 2 years from first registration, optional personal belongings (limited to fire, explosion, thunder, and burglary), and optional misfueling (only at a Cyprus gas station). Smart Drive Premium and Truck Premium use a tighter window: replacement with a new vehicle only if the insured vehicle is less than 1 year from manufacture.

Loss of use under Auto Premium runs at €20/day for up to 15 days. Smart Drive Premium runs at €15/day for up to 15 days. Windscreen cover for private vehicles runs up to €1,000, but excess applies unless the repair is done at an Anytime partner garage. Key replacement is €150. Personal accident death benefit is €10,000. Anytime IPID section 5 requires inspection and photographs before activating most own-damage covers.

Both products carry third-party liability cover well above the Cyprus statutory minimum required under Cap. 333. Per published IPID figures, AIG Road Star sits at €36,350,000 personal injury and €1,220,000 property damage per event; Anytime sits at €38,600,000 and €1,300,000 respectively. The digital Green Card has been valid in Cyprus since January 2025, which simplifies cross-border travel for both insurers' policyholders.

What this means for buyers:
For most expats, the deciding rows are documentation language, occupied-territories cover, and the inspection-before-cover requirement. For young drivers under 30 with regular monthly mileage, the deciding row is Smart Drive availability.

What is Anytime Smart Drive, and is it worth it?

Smart Drive is Anytime's Pay How You Drive (PHYD) telematics product. It fits careful drivers aged 18 to 30 who do daily commutes and want a measurable way to bring renewal premiums down. It does not fit low-mileage drivers, retirees, or second-car owners, because the 250 km/month minimum disqualifies them.

The eligibility list is short:

1

Passenger cars only.

No commercial use.

2

Individuals only.

Not businesses.

3

Phone app installed within 5 days of policy start.

4

Principal driver covers at least 250 km per month.

5

App tracks speeding, sharp braking, sharp acceleration, and mobile-phone use.

6

Discount applied at renewal based on driving score,

up to 15% per the Cyprus Mail's 2020 launch coverage.

AIG has no equivalent telematics product on Road Star. For more on this segment, see our guide to car insurance for young drivers in Cyprus.

What this means for buyers:
Smart Drive is a real product win for Anytime in the 18-30 segment. The trade-off is the 250 km/month threshold and the consent to driving-behaviour tracking, which is monitored continuously through the app.

Does AIG cover driving in the occupied areas of Cyprus?

AIG Road Star is the only major Cyprus motor insurance product that explicitly extends own-damage cover into the occupied territories of Cyprus. The AIG Road Star IPID states the extension verbatim. Anytime's IPID makes no equivalent extension.
Key Finding
"This policy also covers loss or damage to your Motor Vehicle that occurs in the occupied territories of Cyprus." (AIG Road Star IPID)

There is one important caveat. AIG's road and accident assistance services apply only in government-controlled areas of Cyprus and the Sovereign Base Areas. So a vehicle damaged in the occupied territories is covered for loss or damage, but cannot be recovered by AIG's roadside-assistance partner from north of the buffer zone. Only the loss/damage cover follows the vehicle north. The recovery assistance does not.

A separate practical point: TRNC border authorities may require a separate local third-party policy at the crossing. The AIG extension covers your own vehicle for loss or damage. It does not replace the local TPL paperwork the crossing authorities ask for.

What this means for buyers:
For Nicosia residents and anyone who crosses the buffer zone regularly, this is the single deciding factor between the two products.

Which is cheaper, AIG or Anytime?

Anytime usually wins on base price for digital-first buyers and 18-30 drivers who use Smart Drive's telematics renewal discount. AIG Road Star prices higher at base. Both insurers price each driver from individual factors (age, area, vehicle, history), so exact like-for-like prices need a real quote.

General Cyprus market price ranges (not insurer-specific)

The figures below are Cyprus motor market averages across all insurers, drawn from DigiCare's broker placements. They are not specific AIG-versus-Anytime quotes. For a real side-by-side number, run a quote.

Coverage tierAnnual rangeMonthly range
Third-party liability (TPL)€180 to €300€15 to €25
TPL Fire & Theft€250 to €400€21 to €33
Comprehensive€400 to €1,000+€33 to €83+

Market averages from DigiCare broker placements. Individual prices vary by age, area, vehicle, and claims history.

Anytime makes two regulatory cost items visible at IPID level: a 5% Motor Insurers' Fund fee and €2 stamp duty. These items apply to all Cyprus motor insurers. AIG simply bundles them into the quoted premium. AIG's payment terms allow either a lump sum or instalments if the premium is above €300. A 2024 r/cyprus thread on car insurance noted that 'Anytime is generally recommended' by users, primarily on price.

What this means for buyers:
Price-led buyers will skew toward Anytime. Coverage-led buyers will skew toward AIG. Get a quick quote through DigiCare to see your actual price.

How does the claims process work with each?

The two insurers use different claims paths. If a complaint is not resolved internally with either insurer, it can be escalated to the Cyprus Financial Ombudsman.

The deeper difference is the human layer. With AIG, the broker (DigiCare or another) is your single point of contact. They open the file, chase the adjuster, and translate documentation. With Anytime, you contact the insurer directly through phone (800 88 800), email (motor@anytimeonline.com.cy), or the my.anytimeonline.com.cy portal.

What this means for buyers:
If you value broker advocacy, meaning a single point of contact who knows your file and chases it through to settlement, AIG's broker-distribution model gives you that layer. If you prefer to interact with the insurer directly online and by phone, Anytime is built for that pattern.

AIG vs Anytime support: broker-distributed versus direct-to-consumer

AIG distributes mainly through licensed Cyprus brokers like DigiCare, while Anytime is direct-to-consumer (online or by phone at 800 88 800). Brokers like DigiCare can issue AIG policies online with no office visit required. Both insurers have registered offices in Nicosia.

Both companies have registered offices in Nicosia (Anytime on Griva Digeni Avenue, AIG on Esperidon Street in Strovolos), and neither publishes walk-in customer counter hours. Service runs through phone, email, and broker channels.

The language difference is documented in writing. Anytime IPID section 10 states verbatim: "Relevant information is provided to the consumer in Greek. The Company undertakes the obligation to communicate with you and to draw up the terms of the Insurance Policy in Greek. If you wish, communication with you may also be made in English." AIG Road Star is published in both English and Greek, while Anytime IPID §10 defaults to Greek with English on request.

We're digital-first too. You can buy an AIG policy through DigiCare entirely online — no office visit needed. Third-party liability policies issue almost instantly. Comprehensive policies move a little slower if you don't supply a no-claim discount certificate from your previous insurer, because AIG's head office reviews and approves those cases before binding. With your NCD certificate in hand, comprehensive issuance speeds up too.

As a Cyprus-licensed broker working with both insurers, DigiCare provides English, Russian, and Greek support. Our team handles claims advocacy, mid-term changes, and renewals as the local human-support layer for both products. For a wider explanation of how this works, see why buying through a broker works differently.

What this means for buyers:
For non-Greek-speaking buyers, AIG plus broker support removes the language friction that Anytime's IPID openly discloses. If you read and write Greek comfortably, that friction is smaller, and Anytime's direct portal becomes a real convenience.

AIG vs Anytime: best for which type of driver?

1

Expat in Limassol, Paphos, or Nicosia with a vehicle worth €20,000 or more.

AIG Road Star. Bilingual EN/GR documentation, S&P AA-, Moody's A1, broader personal-belongings cover, no-excess windscreen.

2

Nicosia resident or buffer-zone commuter.

AIG Road Star. The only IPID with a verbatim occupied-territories own-damage extension.

3

Driver aged 18 to 30, digital-first, drives 250+ km per month.

Anytime Smart Drive. Up to 15% PHYD renewal discount, with no AIG equivalent.

4

Long-tenure Cyprus resident on a fixed budget.

Comparison call. Anytime Auto Economic offers a 6-month policy option and a lower base price. AIG Road Star Comprehensive offers richer coverage. Get both quotes.

5

Almost-new car owner (1-2 years old).

Anytime Auto Premium. Replacement with a new vehicle up to 2 years from first registration. AIG limits this to vehicles under 1 year.

6

Cyprus business owner with a vehicle fleet or cross-border operations.

AIG. Motor Fleet Insurance covers 10+ vehicles with the same occupied-areas extension; Insurance Abroad covers Cyprus businesses expanding overseas. Anytime offers truck insurance but no fleet or international product.

Our broker recommendation

For the broad majority of Cyprus drivers, expats and Nicosia residents in particular, AIG Road Star is the recommendation. Three reasons sit behind that call: the verbatim occupied-territories IPID extension, the S&P AA- and Moody's A1 financial-strength ratings, and the bilingual EN/GR documentation that works for both English- and Greek-speaking buyers, where Anytime defaults to Greek.

The honest exception is Anytime Smart Drive for drivers aged 18 to 30 who can hit at least 250 km per month and want measurable behaviour-based renewal savings. For that specific profile, Anytime is the right answer.

DigiCare places policies with both insurers and runs the comparison for you in a single conversation. See DigiCare car insurance for the product page, or move straight to a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes for digital-first 18-30 drivers, where Smart Drive's telematics discount is a real renewal saving. Watch for the Greek-first IPID and the partner-garage windscreen excess if you take your car to an independent repairer.
AIG Europe S.A. holds S&P AA- (May 2025) and Moody's A1 (November 2025), among the strongest ratings of any Cyprus motor insurer. The AIG Cyprus Google Reviews sample is small (1.9/5 from 9 reviews), too few data points to be statistically meaningful, so the financial-strength ratings are the more reliable signal.
Anytime is generally cheaper at base for younger online buyers. AIG is higher at base but includes English-native documents and occupied-areas own-damage cover. Real prices vary by driver age, area, vehicle, and history, so the only honest answer is a side-by-side quote.
No. Only AIG Road Star explicitly extends loss-or-damage cover into the occupied areas via its IPID. Anytime's IPID makes no such extension. Recovery assistance from either insurer is limited to government-controlled Cyprus and (for AIG) the Sovereign Base Areas.
Yes, through a Cyprus broker like DigiCare. We issue AIG policies online — no office visit required. Third-party liability issues fast. Comprehensive cover may take a bit longer if you don't supply a no-claim discount (NCD) certificate from your previous insurer, because AIG's head office reviews those cases before binding. With the NCD certificate in hand, comprehensive issuance speeds up too.
The Anytime website is bilingual, but IPID section 10 makes Greek the default and English an opt-in. Some app screens default to Greek. DigiCare can issue and administer Anytime policies in English on your behalf.
Anytime is the direct-sales brand of INTERAMERICAN Hellenic Insurance Company S.A. (Greece), part of the Achmea group (Netherlands) since 2001. The Cyprus branch is overseas company AE 3036.
AIG Cyprus is a branch of AIG Europe S.A., a Luxembourg-incorporated subsidiary of American International Group, Inc. (Luxembourg R.C.S. number B 218806). Cyprus overseas company AE2631.

AIG vs Anytime Cyprus: the bottom line

For the broad majority of Cyprus drivers, AIG Road Star is the stronger choice: the occupied-territories own-damage extension, the S&P AA- and Moody's A1 financial strength, and the bilingual EN/GR IPID remove the three friction points that matter most at claim time.

Anytime Smart Drive is genuinely the right answer for drivers aged 18 to 30 who drive 250 km or more per month and want a measurable path to lower renewal premiums. Beyond that specific segment, the coverage and language advantages tip toward AIG. DigiCare is a Cyprus-licensed broker. We help you choose the right policy from our panel of insurers and handle claims advocacy in English, Russian, or Greek.
