How much does life insurance cost in Cyprus?
I get asked this question daily. The honest answer: it depends on your age, health, and the type of cover you want. But here's a real benchmark. The average life insurance premium in Cyprus runs about €440 per year. That's well below the European average of €1,106. If you just need a mortgage-linked policy, you can start from €150 per year.
| Policy Type | Typical Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| Term life (mortgage-linked) | €150–400 |
| Term life (level, €200K cover) | €200–600 |
| Whole life (unit-linked savings) | €500–1,500+ |
| Keyman insurance | Quote required |
| Group life (per employee) | Quote required |
Your premium depends on five main things: your age at entry, your health and medical history, whether you smoke, the coverage amount, and the policy type you choose.
Premiums shown are indicative figures based on Cyprus market data. Actual rates depend on your insurer, medical underwriting, and risk assessment.
Types of life insurance available in Cyprus
There are three main categories. Each works differently and suits a different situation. Here's the breakdown.
| Feature | Term Life | Whole Life | Endowment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duration | 5–30 years | Lifetime | Fixed term |
| Savings component | No | Yes (unit-linked) | Yes (guaranteed) |
| Cost | Lowest | Higher | Highest |
| Best for | Mortgage, young families | Long-term wealth, estate planning | Savings goal + protection |
Term life is the simplest option. You pick a duration, say 20 years, and the insurer pays a lump sum if you die during that period. No frills, no savings element, and the lowest premiums. This is what banks accept for mortgages. In my experience, about 70% of our clients go with term life.
Whole life insurance covers you for your entire lifetime. Premiums are higher because part of your payment goes into a unit-linked investment fund. Over time, your policy builds a cash value you can borrow against or withdraw. It's popular with high earners looking for tax-efficient savings alongside protection.
Popular riders you can add
Most Cyprus insurers let you add riders to your base policy. The most common ones: critical illness cover (pays a lump sum on diagnosis of cancer, heart attack, or stroke), accidental death benefit (doubles the payout if death is accidental), total permanent disability (pays out if you can't work again), and waiver of premium (the insurer pays your premiums if you become disabled).
Life insurance tax benefits in Cyprus
This is where life insurance in Cyprus gets genuinely interesting. Life insurance premiums are tax-deductible. It's one of the few legal ways to reduce your income tax bill, and most people don't take full advantage of it.
Here's how it works. You can deduct up to 7% of your insured sum from your taxable income each year. All life insurance deductions, combined with contributions to approved provident funds and similar schemes, are capped at 20% of your total chargeable income.
Tax example
Say you have a €200,000 life insurance policy. Your maximum annual deduction is 7% of €200,000, which equals €14,000. If your chargeable income is €50,000, that deduction saves you real money on your tax bill every single year the policy is active.
One thing to be aware of: if you cancel your policy early, there's a tax clawback. Within the first 3 years, the tax authorities claw back 30% of the deductions you've already claimed. Between years 4 and 6, the clawback drops to 20%. After 6 years, there's no clawback at all. So the longer you hold the policy, the better the tax benefit.
One more advantage: insurance premiums in Cyprus are exempt from VAT. You pay no additional tax on top of your premium.
Who needs life insurance in Cyprus?
Life insurance is voluntary in Cyprus. No law requires it. But for certain people, it's practically essential. Here's who I see buying it most often.
Property buyers & mortgage holders
Banks in Cyprus won't approve your mortgage without a life insurance policy assigned to them. The policy has to cover at least the outstanding loan amount. This isn't a law, it's a bank requirement, but it's non-negotiable.
Parents with dependants
If your family depends on your income, life insurance is the safety net. A €200,000 term policy costs roughly €200–400 per year. That's less than €1 per day to make sure your children are financially secure.
High earners
The tax deduction makes life insurance genuinely attractive if you're in a higher tax bracket. You get protection and a tax break. Whole life policies also let you build wealth in a tax-efficient wrapper.
Expats in Cyprus
Many expats don't have a local safety net. Your home country benefits don't follow you to Cyprus. A local life insurance policy fills that gap and gives your family a payout they can access quickly, without cross-border complications.
Business owners
Keyman insurance protects your business if a critical person dies. Partnership insurance funds a buy-sell agreement. Group life insurance is a low-cost employee benefit. We set up all three.
