How much does group medical insurance cost per employee?
I get asked this question every week by business owners. The honest answer: group medical insurance in Cyprus costs between EUR 20 and EUR 140 per employee per month. Where you land depends on coverage tier, insurer, group size, and the average age of your team. Here are the ranges I see most often.
| Plan Type | Monthly Cost Per Employee |
|---|---|
| Local inpatient only | €20-35 |
| Local inpatient + outpatient | €30-55 |
| Local comprehensive (dental, optical) | €40-70 |
| International inpatient | €50-120 |
| International comprehensive | €80-140 |
Prices are indicative ranges based on market data for groups of 5-50 employees. Actual premiums depend on group demographics and claims history.

The 2024 tax advantage: 100% deductible group health premiums
This is the part most business owners don't know about. Under Circular 3/2024, employer-paid group health insurance premiums are fully deductible as a business expense. No annual cap. The old 1% restriction is gone.
Employer premiums: 100% tax-deductible with no cap (Circular 3/2024, effective from 2024)
Employee contributions: deductible at 2% of taxable income (up from 1.5%)
At the current 15% corporate tax rate, every EUR 10,000 in premiums saves your company EUR 1,500 in tax
Here's a real example. A company with 20 employees pays EUR 45 per employee per month. That's EUR 10,800 per year. At the 15% corporate tax rate, the tax saving comes to EUR 1,620. So the effective annual cost drops to EUR 9,180, or just EUR 38.25 per employee per month.
Tax regulations can change. Please consult your corporate tax advisor to verify how these deductions apply to your specific business.
Group medical insurance vs GeSY: do you need both?
| Feature | GeSY | Group Medical Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory? | Yes (employer 2.90% + employee 2.65%) | No (voluntary benefit) |
| Specialist access | Weeks to months via referral | Days, direct access |
| Hospital choice | GeSY-contracted hospitals only | Any private hospital |
| Dental cover | Not included | Yes (as add-on) |
| Optical cover | Not included | Yes (as add-on) |
| Treatment abroad | Very limited | Yes (international plans) |
| Who controls the plan | Government | Employer chooses tier and insurer |
Most of our corporate clients use GeSY as the baseline and add group medical on top to fill the gaps. Faster specialist access, broader hospital choice, dental and optical cover. GeSY simply doesn't provide those.
Which businesses need group medical insurance?
Any Cyprus employer can set up a group medical plan. Most local insurers require a minimum of 5 employees, though international options start at just 3. It's especially popular with companies competing for skilled workers in these sectors.
Technology & IT
The most competitive talent market in Cyprus right now. If you're not offering private health cover, your best developers will go to a company that does.
Financial & Professional Services
Staff retention is everything here. International plans work well for employees who travel between EU offices.
Shipping & Maritime
A major Cyprus sector with international crews. Worldwide coverage is typically a requirement, not a nice-to-have.
Hospitality & Tourism
Year-round core staff benefit from coverage. In my experience, it helps reduce the kind of turnover that ends up costing you more than the premiums.
Construction & Manufacturing
Group medical plans complement your mandatory employers' liability insurance for complete employee protection.
