Professional Indemnity Insurance for Lawyers in Cyprus — from €180/year
Professional indemnity insurance for lawyers covers an advocate's or law firm's legal liability when advice, drafting, or the handling of a case causes a client financial loss. It pays defence costs, settlements, and damages. The same cover is also called professional liability, errors and omissions (E&O), or US "legal malpractice". In Cyprus a practising lawyer is an "advocate" (δικηγόρος) registered with the Cyprus Bar Association. DigiCare Insurance is an independent Cyprus broker serving Cypriot and EU expat advocates alike.
No valid PI policy, no licence renewal. You need cover in force at every annual Bar renewal.

Five languages
We work in English, Russian, Greek, Hebrew, and Polish. That suits EU and expat advocates, plus international firms practising in Cyprus.
The rule
Is professional indemnity insurance mandatory for lawyers in Cyprus?
Yes. It's compulsory for every practising advocate in Cyprus. Since January 2010, a valid PI policy has been a legal condition of renewing your practising licence with the Cyprus Bar Association, under Article 6E of the Advocates Law (Cap. 2).
The mechanic is simple. No cover, no renewal. The Bar won't renew your annual practising licence without proof of a valid PI policy.
Law firms and partnerships are covered too. The Advocates Professional Indemnity Regulations deal with common cover for partners, and firms typically arrange a single policy covering all partners and employed advocates. Confirm the current Regulations with the Bar, since the detail can change.
EU and expat lawyers registered with the Cyprus Bar face the same Article 6E requirement. If you hold a Cyprus practising licence, you need the cover. Cross-border and visiting lawyers should confirm their own arrangements.

Minimum PI cover for lawyers in Cyprus
Every Cyprus advocate must hold professional indemnity cover of at least €170,860 for each claim and €341,720 in aggregate per insurance period, plus a minimum €25,630 in addition for defence expenses. These are the minimum terms set by the Cyprus Bar Association under Article 6E of the Advocates Law (Cap. 2).
| Requirement | Minimum amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Per claim | €170,860 | Bar minimum terms, Article 6E |
| Aggregate per insurance period | €341,720 | Bar minimum terms, Article 6E |
| Defence expenses (in addition) | €25,630 | Bar minimum terms, Article 6E |
These are statutory minimums, a floor and not a ceiling. Larger firms and high-value transactional work usually need higher limits. A single corporate deal or a property file can expose a firm to a claim far above €170,860, so many practices buy well above the minimum.
Your policy may also carry an excess, up to 1% of the limit per the Bar minimum terms. Confirm the current schedule, since these terms can be updated. (businessincyprus.gov.cy, CCBE)
How much does lawyers' PI insurance cost in Cyprus?
Professional indemnity insurance for a Cyprus lawyer starts from around €180 per year for a sole practitioner at the statutory minimum limit. The premium climbs with the size of the firm, the cover limit you pick, the areas of law you practise, and your claims history. Conveyancing, corporate, and litigation work carry more risk, so they cost more to insure.
- Firm size: a sole advocate pays less than a multi-partner firm.
- Cover limit: the statutory minimum is the cheapest base; higher limits cost more.
- Areas of practice: conveyancing, corporate, and litigation push the price up.
- Claims history: past claims raise the premium.
| Practice | Indicative annual premium |
|---|---|
| Sole advocate at minimum limit | from €180/yr |
| 2 to 3 partner firm | By quote |
| Specialist, corporate, or transactional firm (higher limit) | By quote |
The €180 figure is an indicative starting premium for the cheapest profile. Your final price comes from a quote, so we can match the cover to your actual practice.
What lawyers' PI insurance covers (and what it doesn't)
A claim against a lawyer usually starts with one mistake that costs the client money. Here's how the cover responds.
What it covers
What it does not cover
How claims-made cover works
Lawyer PI is written on a claims-made basis. A claim is covered if it's first made against you during the policy period, and the work that triggered it post-dates your retroactive date. This is the part advocates most often get wrong. If you let cover lapse, a claim made after the gap may not be paid, even for old work.
A few examples show how this plays out. A litigation advocate misses a limitation period and the client loses the right to sue, then sues the advocate. A property lawyer runs a defective conveyancing search and the buyer inherits a charge on the title. A corporate adviser gives a negligent opinion on a holding structure and the client faces an unexpected tax bill. Each one is a financial loss caused by professional work, which is exactly what PI answers.
One thing PI doesn't do: it won't cover bodily injury or damage to property. That belongs to public liability insurance. A data breach or hacked client file is a cyber insurance matter. For the generic concept and how PI sits beside other covers, see professional indemnity insurance in Cyprus.
Run-off cover, partnerships, and law firms
Because PI is claims-made, a claim can land after you retire or after a firm closes. Run-off cover answers this. It responds to claims made after you stop practising, for work you did while insured. A retiring advocate or a closing firm should arrange run-off, and confirm any obligation with the Bar on cessation.
Partnerships and incorporated law firms usually arrange a single policy covering all partners and employed advocates in common. The Advocates Professional Indemnity Regulations deal with common cover for partners. Confirm the current Regulations with the Bar.
Joining or leaving a firm affects who carries the retroactive date and the run-off. If you move, check that your past work stays covered under the new arrangement.
Larger transactional and corporate firms usually buy well above the statutory minimum, because a single high-value file can produce a claim far bigger than €170,860.
Who needs lawyers' PI insurance
Every practising advocate in Cyprus needs this cover to renew a licence. Some practices carry more risk than others.
Sole practitioners
You carry the full exposure alone, so cover at the statutory minimum is your starting point.
Litigation advocates
A missed deadline or limitation period is a common, costly claim.
Conveyancing and property lawyers
A defective search or title error can expose you to a large loss.
Corporate and commercial firms
High-value advice and transactions usually call for limits well above the minimum.
EU and expat lawyers registered with the Cyprus Bar are subject to the same Article 6E requirement as Cypriot advocates. We handle the whole process in English.
