What is family health insurance in Cyprus (and what it is NOT)

Family health insurance in Cyprus is voluntary private medical cover that insures two or more related people, usually two parents and their children, under one policy. We set this cover up for families every week at DigiCare Insurance, and the families split fairly evenly between long-settled residents and parents who arrived in Cyprus only recently. The cover sits on top of GeSY, the country's General Healthcare System, rather than replacing it. Every legal resident can use GeSY for state care. What private family insurance buys you is faster access, a choice of doctor, and the extras the public system leaves out.

One point trips families up almost every week, so let's clear it now. Family health insurance is private medical cover for your family's treatment. It is not the same as the health-insurance certificate some relatives need for a residence application. Those are visa documents. This page is about insuring your family's health.

Private family cover is voluntary. No law forces residents to buy it. The insurers offering it are licensed and supervised by the Superintendent of Insurance under Law 38(I)/2016. If you want the full picture first, start with our guide to private health insurance in Cyprus.

Family health insurance plans in Cyprus: local vs international

Cyprus families pick from two plan types. A local plan covers treatment inside Cyprus and costs less. An international plan covers your family worldwide, which suits parents who travel often or might relocate again down the line. Children join as dependants under one family policy, so everything sits on a single contract with one renewal date to remember.

How much does family health insurance cost in Cyprus?

A family of four, say two parents in their late 30s and two children, can expect roughly €2,500 to €3,000 a year for an entry-level local plan (CORE tier). That works out at around €210 to €250 a month. Step up to CLASSIC or PRIME, or to international cover, and the price rises. The figures below are real DCare prices, not a quote-gate ballpark.

Family compositionCORE (€350 excess)CLASSICPRIME
Couple≈€2,054/yr (~€171/mo)n/an/a
Family of 3≈€2,459/yr (~€205/mo)n/an/a
Family of 4≈€2,864/yr (~€239/mo)≈€4,624/yr (~€385/mo)≈€6,082/yr (~€507/mo)

Source: DCare engine, 3 June 2026, region 01, €350 excess. Your exact premium comes from the quote form.

What moves your family's price comes down to a few things. The number and age of your children matters most, since each child added as a dependant carries its own rate. Then there's the plan tier: CORE is the entry level, while CLASSIC and PRIME add higher limits and benefits. And the excess you pick plays a part too, because a higher excess pulls the premium down.

Here's a detail that saves families money. The €36 policy fee applies once per policy, not per person, so a family quote works out cheaper than adding up separate individual quotes. For the informational breakdown, see our monthly cost breakdown.

GeSY vs private family cover: what GeSY gives, what private adds

Every legal resident, your family included, can use GeSY. Private cover doesn't replace it. It sits alongside it, adding faster access, a choice of doctor, and benefits GeSY leaves out. Most families we work with end up using both.

What family health insurance covers, and what it doesn't

Coverage varies by insurer and by tier, so treat the lists below as a guide to what a family plan usually includes rather than a fixed promise.

Usually covered

Inpatient treatment and surgery

Outpatient specialists and consultations

Child illnesses and vaccinations, where the plan includes them

Maternity, after a waiting period (typically 12 to 24 months)

Diagnostics and scans

Excluded or sold as add-ons

Pre-existing conditions (often excluded or subject to a waiting period)

Dental and optical (usually add-ons on local plans)

Cosmetic surgery

HIV and AIDS

Obesity treatment

Two points catch families out more than any others. Maternity carries a waiting period, so the time to buy cover is well before you plan a pregnancy, not after. And children join as dependants: DCare covers a dependant child to age 19, but each insurer sets its own age limit, so check that before you sign. Your insurer's Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) spells out the exact terms.
