Cyprus Residence Permit Renewal Online (2026): Who Can Actually Use It

That 25% figure comes from the government's own launch release. Read it the other way round and it says something blunter: the Migration Department expects roughly three quarters of residence permit applications to stay on the in-person route. Which side of that line you land on depends on which permit you hold.

At DigiCare Insurance we read the government's published document checklist for every eligible category before writing this guide. Those checklists disagree with Google's AI Overview on one point that matters to anyone budgeting a renewal: whether health insurance belongs on the list at all. On long-term resident status, it does not.

What changed when Cyprus residence permit renewal moved online on 6 July 2026?

In its 6 July 2026 launch release, the government put three numbers on that estimate, and no other guide to this service quotes any of them. Once fully operational, it expects the service to cover 73% of renewal applications in the five eligible categories, 60% of all applications in those same categories including first registrations, and 25% of applications across every category of residence permit. The third figure is the one to hold on to. The first two measure the service against its own slice; only the 25% measures it against the whole system.

The service was announced jointly by the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, and the Migration Department. The Migration Department handles the permits themselves, and it now sits under that Deputy Ministry. Older pages still call it the "Civil Registry and Migration Department"; that name has been superseded.

The launch release describes what the service does end to end. In the government's own terms, the stages are:

Payment comes after the review, not at submission. That surprises people. And the last two stages happen in person, which is why we describe the service as mostly online rather than fully online.

The release calls this "the first package of digital services" of the Migration Department, with more planned. The Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Dr Nicholas A. Ioannides, heads the ministry behind it. The category list below is accurate today and will change.

Which permit categories can renew online in Cyprus?

The family reunification category is narrower than almost every secondary source reports. The service page scopes it to family members of long-term residents and of employees in companies of foreign interests. It is not family reunification in general, and if your sponsor holds a different permit type, you are outside it.

Cyprus is not Greece. Greece runs its own online renewal service for third-country nationals through gov.gr, and it has done since February 2024. That service covers all categories and tells applicants to apply exclusively electronically. The Greek portal ranks highly on Cyprus searches. Its rules do not apply in Cyprus, where the online route covers five categories out of many.

The Republic is not the north. This service, and any residence permit or health policy issued under it, applies in the areas controlled by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.

A residence permit is also not the same document as an Alien Registration Card, a national ID card or a passport. Renewing one does not renew the others. All of them sit under the Aliens and Immigration Law, Cap. 105, which governs the permit system as a whole.

Who still cannot renew online, and what does the 25% figure really mean?

The groups left on the old route include:

• Visitor permit (pink slip) holders. Not an eligible category. Our pink slip guide covers that route, and the pink slip cost breakdown covers what it costs.
• Students. Student permits are granted for one year and renewed one month before expiry, confirmed by the European Commission's immigration portal, and they are not on the online list.
• Digital Nomad Visa holders and EU Blue Card holders. Neither category appears in the five.
• Permanent residence by investment under Regulation 6(2). A different status with a different process, explained in our permanent residency guide.
• EU citizens on MEU1 or MEU3. The service is for third-country nationals. EU citizens are outside it entirely, and our MEU1 yellow slip guide covers what applies instead.
• Category F retirees. Also outside the five, and covered in our Category F guide.

A sharper limit catches people inside an eligible category. The launch release restricts the employment categories to cases where "the employee continues to work for the same employer or in the same company". Change job and you fall out of the online route. The proof sits in the government's own paperwork: gov.cy publishes a separate renewal checklist for the employer-change case under its own form number. On the visitor route, two requirements decide it: a Plan A health insurance certificate, with no GeSY alternative available, and a Cyprus bank balance of not less than €6,000 at submission, which gov.cy describes as three months' income "regardless of the size of the family".

Do I need a CY Login account, and is it the same as Ariadni?

Verification is where people get stuck, partly because the English service page does not explain it. The government's Greek-language version of the same page does, and it lists four ways to verify a CY Login account:

We name that source on purpose. Those four routes appear on gov.cy's Greek page and not on its English one, so an English-only reader has no way to find them. Start verification early: a video call slot or a Centre appointment is not something you arrange on the afternoon your permit expires.

The application does not have to come from the permit holder. gov.cy allows the holder, the employer, or an authorised representative such as a law firm or accounting firm to submit it. That reverses the in-person habit, where the applicant usually has to appear.

The submission portal itself is a separate address from the description page, and it is the page most readers are actually looking for. The English service page is where the eligibility wording lives.

When is the deadline for renewal of a temporary residence permit in Cyprus, and what does it cost?

Watch one line item that is easy to double-count. Registration in the Aliens' Register costs €70, and it appears on three of those four gov.cy pages marked "only in cases of first registration". It is not a renewal charge. If you have registered before, do not budget for it again.

The two deadlines look like a contradiction and are not. The deadline mirrors the examination time. Long-term status takes about three months to examine, so gov.cy asks for it three months out. An ordinary permit moves faster, so one month is enough. Sources that average these into a vague "one to three months" are describing two different permits as if they were one.

Then there is the question of how long it takes. As of 16 September 2026, gov.cy has published no processing time for the online route. The figure in wide circulation, four to ten weeks, comes from the relocation site resident.cy, on a page describing the pre-July in-person process, so it is not a measurement of this service. Self-reported waits on Cyprus expat forums ran far longer: one resident posting on expat.com logged 11 months, then 8, then 6 across three consecutive renewals, and a Reddit thread records an applicant still waiting at 18 months. Those are the old route, reported by applicants rather than published by the government. For the new route there is no figure yet.

Payment timing matters for cash flow too. The launch release confirms it happens electronically after the review is completed, not when you submit.

Which parts of the renewal are still in person?

Biometrics apply to renewals as well as to first issue. The general procedure page states that collection of biometric data "is also necessary for the renewal of a temporary residence and employment permit", so an existing card does not exempt you.

Where you go is worth knowing before you book anything. gov.cy states that biometric data can be captured at the offices of the Department in Nicosia or at the district unit of the Aliens and Immigration Service of the Police for your district of residence. A word on the seven-day rule people repeat. The Cyprus law firm papacleovoulou states that applicants must attend the service point within seven days of paying. We could not find that rule on any gov.cy page, so treat it as that firm's guidance rather than a published requirement, and confirm your own window when you book.

Does Cyprus residence permit renewal require health insurance?

It depends on the category. On some routes a Plan A certificate is compulsory; on long-term resident status, no health insurance is asked for at all.

Category by category, with each row taken from the government's own checklist for that route:

Every eligible route except long-term residents needs a policy. Domestic employment and employment in companies of foreign interests both require immigration health insurance, and we place it on those routes routinely. What gov.cy does not publish for either is an employee-level supporting-documents list in English. We read every document on the domestic work and companies of foreign interests pages to confirm that. On family reunification the policy has to cover the sponsor and each named family member.

"Plan A" is the government's own label, not an insurer's product name. It means cover for inpatient and outpatient care plus repatriation of remains. The remunerated employment renewal checklist asks for "transportaion [sic] of corpse", reproducing gov.cy's own spelling. GeSY substitutes only part of the requirement, and only on some routes. The family reunification checklist accepts a registration certificate in the General Healthcare System (GeSY), administered by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), "and private insurance for transportation of corpse". The same alternative runs across the employment routes. It appears nowhere in either visitor checklist, which is why the pink slip row says no. GeSY removes the inpatient and outpatient half; it never removes the repatriation cover. Our GeSY guide covers what enrolment includes.

A second insurance document on that checklist is aimed at the employer, not the applicant. It asks for Employer's Liability Insurance with automatic renewal. That cover is already compulsory under the Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Law 174(Ι)/1989, regardless of any permit, so gov.cy is asking to see a policy the employer must hold anyway. Two different Cyprus statuses both get called permanent residence: the Regulation 6(2) immigration permit, which is investment-based, and Long-Term Resident status, the five-year route under Directive 2003/109/EC filed on form MLT3. Insurance requirements written for the first get reused for the second, and that is how "health insurance is required" ends up attached to a checklist that never mentions it.

Paperwork diverges by status in ways that are easy to miss. Family reunification requires a bank letter of guarantee valid for 10 years against repatriation costs, waived entirely where the sponsor holds a long-term residence permit. Passport validity differs too: 6 months beyond the requested permit for general employment, 2 years for long-term residents, 9 months minimum for family reunification. Same family, same renewal, different paperwork.

Family reunification also carries a medical requirement the other routes do not. The same checklist calls for medical examinations covering AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and Tuberculosis, validated by a specialist, under article 18ΛΑ(2)(η) of the Aliens and Immigration Law. Children under 15 take a Mantoux skin test instead of an X-ray, and under-6s born in Cyprus are not asked for one at all. What happens if your residence permit expires before the renewal is finished?

The government's residence permits page sets out the mechanics in full. In order:

A pending application also protects you from police checks, but not for everyone. It does not extend to immigration permits or to long-term resident status, so holders of those two should not rely on it.

Do you have to renew permanent residence in Cyprus?

Separate the status from the plastic, and the answer stops being confusing. The residence right granted by a Regulation 6(2) immigration permit does not expire. The card does. It carries a ten-year expiry from the date of issuance, so you replace the card without reapplying for the status behind it. Losing the card does not cost you the right.

Long-Term Resident status works differently. It is the five-year route under Directive 2003/109/EC, filed on form MLT3, and it genuinely is renewed: three months before expiry, for €30, with an examination time of about three months. It is also one of the five categories now eligible for online renewal, while Regulation 6(2) permanent residence is not.

Check your category before you check the portal

Everything on this page keys off one thing: which permit you hold. Eligibility, deadline, fee, document list, and whether insurance appears at all are all decided by category, not by a general rule about Cyprus residence permits.

So do it in that order. Identify your category, open the government's checklist for that category, then open the portal. If your category is not one of the five listed on gov.cy, nothing has changed for you yet, and the Migration Department has said more categories are planned.
